Birdwatchers Diary 2007

The Birdwatchers Diary 2007 is a calendar of birdwatching events for the Dee estuary. Any changes or additions to these events will be shown in the forthcoming events section of the monthly newsletter on this web site. If you wish for a more printer friendly version in MS Word format please request one by .
RSPB events from January to December are shown, note there are no events May to July.

JANUARY

Sunday 14th January 3:00pm
Parkgate Raptor Watch
Come along and watch birds of prey with the experts. See the graceful hen harriers coming in to roost on the RSPB reserve. Other birds of prey we hope to see are merlin, peregrine, sparrowhawk, short-eared owl and barn owl. Meet at the Old Baths car park, which overlooks the Dee Estuary RSPB Reserve at Parkgate, close to The Boat House pub. No need to book.

FEBRUARY

Sunday 11th February 4pm
Parkgate Raptor Watch
Come along and watch birds of prey with the experts. See the graceful hen harriers coming in to roost on the RSPB reserve. Other birds of prey we hope to see are merlin, peregrine, sparrowhawk, short-eared owl and
barn owl. Meet at the Old Baths car park, which overlooks the Dee Estuary RSPB Reserve at Parkgate, close to The Boat House pub. No need to book.


Monday 19th February 11:00am
Parkgate Birdwatch
High tide at Parkgate is the best time to discover the hidden treasures of the Dee Estuary RSPB reserve. If the tide reaches the wall, small mammals such as voles, shrews and possibly water rails are flushed out. Meet at the Old Baths car park overlooking the reserve at Parkgate, close to The Boat House pub (HW 12:27, 10.1m). No need to book.

Tuesday 20th February 11:30am
Parkgate Birdwatch
Another chance to learn about the birdlife of this important saltmarsh reserve. If the tide is high enough, flocks of waders will be joined by raptors such as peregrines, hen harriers and short-eared owls (HW 13:08, 10.2m).

Wednesday 21st February 12am

High tide at Parkgate is the best time to discover the hidden treasures of the Dee Estuary RSPB reserve. If the tide reaches the wall, small mammals such as voles, shrews and possibly water rails are flushed out. Meet at the Old Baths car park overlooking the Dee Estuary Reserve at Parkgate, close to The Boat House pub (HW 1349, 10.0m). For details contact the RSPB on 0151 336 7681. No need to book.

Watch the elegant hen harriers come in to roost on the RSPB reserve at Parkgate. Other birds we hope to see include merlin, peregrine, sparrowhawk, short-eared owl and barn owl. Meet at the Old Baths car park, which overlooks the Dee Estuary RSPB reserve at Parkgate, close to the Boathouse pub.

If the tide reaches the wall, small mammals such as voles, shrews and possibly water rails are flushed out. Thursday 19th April 11:30am

Another chance to learn about the birdlife of this important saltmarsh reserve. If the tide is high enough flocks of waders will be joined by raptors such as peregrines, hen harriers and short-eared owls. (HW 13:22, 10.2m). For details contact the RSPB on 0151 336 7681.

Saturday 21st April 11.30 am
High Tide at Point of Ayr
The spit and saltmarsh at the Point of Ayr are extremely important habitats for birds. They come alive at high tide with waders coming in to roost and there a good some spring migrants. Join the RSPB Warden to watch the action as it unfolds (HW 14.30, 9.2 m) No need to book. Meet at the end of Station Rd. Talacre. For further information contact the RSPB on 0151 336 7681.

AUGUST

Tuesday 28th August.
Skuas and Terns.
Join the Wirral Rangers and staff from the local RSPB reserve for a high-tide Birdwatching event on Hilbre Island. There is a £2 charge for this event. Sorry no dogs! Booking essential with limited places available.

SEPTEMBER

Saturday 1st September, 11am.
High Tide at Point of Ayr RSPB Dee Estuary Nature Reserve.
The spit and saltmarsh at the Point of Ayr are extremely important habitats for birds. They come alive at high tide with waders coming in to roost and ducks drift in on the tide to feed on the marsh. Join the RSPB Warden to watch the action as it unfolds (HW 14:23, 9.4m). No need to book. Meet at the end of Station Rd. Talacre at 11.30 am. Saturday 8th September at 6 pm.
Evening Walk to Burton Point. RSPB Dee Estuary Nature Reserve.
Join the RSPB Wardens on a walk around this new part of the reserve, which is not open to visitors at present. There is a chance of seeing Hobby, Barn Owl and Little Egret and then learn about how we manage the reserve over tea and biscuits. Booking essential. Costs are £3.50 for members and £4.50 for non-members. For details and to book phone the RSPB on 0151 336 7681. Please book early to avoid disappointment, as places are limited.

OCTOBER

Saturday 13th October, 11.00am
High tide Birdwatch at Flint castle, Flight of the Godwits.
Join the wardens from the local RSPB reserve to watch the birds of the estuary as they fly to their roosting areas. Pintail and Black tailed Godwits will be the main attractions but there should be plenty of other birds to see too. (HW 13.20 pm. 9.2 m). Meet at Flint Castle car park next to the lifeboat station at 11 am.

Sunday 21st.October, 3:00pm.
