Directions: From West Kirby take the A 540 towards Heswall. After
the roundabout (1) at Caldy you will see Thurstaston Hill on the left. A
good car park (2) can be found just prior to the Cottage Loaf pub, from
here you can walk over both Thurstaston Hill (3) and Royden Park (4).
Turn right at Station Rd. down to the Wirral Country Park (5) at
Thurstaston. There is car parking at the end of the road on the left. If
you turn right by the caravan park and carry straight on for about half
a mile you end up by the Dee Sailing Club and Causeway (6) where there
is a small car park at the top of the cliff. Walk along the Wirral Way
from the Country Park towards Heswall and on the left is a path to the
Dungeon Wood (7), carry on through the wood, turn left along the path
through the fields with glorious views of the estuary and you eventually
find yourself back in Thurstaston Village (8). Continue by car to
Heswall on the A540 and shortly after entering the town fork right down
Thurstaston Rd. and sharp right down Delavor Rd. which leads on to Banks
Rd. At the end is a large car park (9) and access to Heswall shore, with
Sheldrakes restaurant to the right. A walk along the beach back towards
Thurstaston takes you to Heswall Fields (10), owned by the
National Trust
, a good view point for observing the birds.
Go back up towards Heswall and at Gayton Rd. turn towards Gayton through
the Old Village. Immediately after the shops turn right down Station Rd.
and on to Riverbank Rd. where there is another car park (11) and good
spot to see the birds. This car park marks the start of the RSPB Gayton
Sands Bird Reserve.
Heswall has good bus services to
Liverpool, Birkenhead, West Kirby and Chester. There is a bus service
from the centre of Heswall to the shore at Banks Rd. Map Refs: Car Park
